I love the tech geeks who create these sort of things:

  • The page is almost 1 mile (1.6 Km) high and 800 feet (250 m) wide
  • it is probably the largest webpage on the internet, and surely the biggest one with a real reason for being so (it has to fit 7 billion people)
  • 7 Billion people so beautifully displayed together on a single webpage is a visual testament of the human condition of every single one of us, and all of us together, on our planet earth.

  1. Infographics and visualisation of (big) data is such a ‘hot topic’ right now.

There is something to be said about the materiality of visually representing numbers in relation to relatively uncompelling ideas.

Although, it is kinda ‘cool’ to see 7billion people- what does the website hope to convey? What is its purpose? To entertain? To educate?

According to their ‘about page’: http://www.7billionworld.com/about.php

We believe that this special webpage carries strong philosophical, symbolic, and aesthetic attributes.
Even the mathematics behind the implementation of this page is deeply fascinating.

7 Billion people so beautifully displayed together on a single webpage is a visual testament of the human condition of every single one of us, and all of us together, on our planet earth.
It is available on the internet for everybody in the world to watch at any time, adding to the feeling of sharing something in common.

It is also a snapshot of an extraordinary moment in history: the exact instant when we reached 7 billion people on earth, captured on October 31, 2011 at 5:49:16 GMT.

7 billion people- accounted for, but we are all nameless and faceless, and according to this, we are all about 5mm tall 😉
