API – APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE – twitter API allows you to plug together programmes (core) resource URL – format – not the twitter that you see.  A central strategy.

Ian Tomlinson killed at G20 Protest- phones video on youtube was used as major evidence. Police remain anonymous during protests by removing their security numbers.

2008 Austin Blood Drive Tweet- donating blood- highlights the utter immediacy of social media- you need to stay on top of it since its environment is changing weekly.

Iranian FB Group “women equals Men” during the earthquake- was used to donate blood for victims. Similar to the 4636 Mission Report for Haiti Relief Effort. – crowd sourcing of text messages- touches upon the psychological aspect of crowd sourcing. http://www.mission4636.org/report/

CROP MOB- vimeo video- Sustainable agriculture- people have a place to learn, are given a sense of community and the famers get extra help. Highlights the idea of LEARNING as being a big motivation of crowd sourcing. By doing something useful you are learning- meet up mentality is the associated frame of thought.

“A run with the good gym” – people who need a reason to run can come together and do something for the community at the same time- in this case delivering sacks of turf to the roof of a school. http://vimeo.com/16691502 Overcome social isolation which is becoming an ever bigger problem in the UK- this idea is a classic mash up (taking 2 unlikely things and mix them together). Ticked many boxes of society.

PIVOT – group runs in london – women feel safer running in groups.

Data cleaning- no specialist skills are needed. Can become an empowering self-organisation. Definitely going to be a growth area.

37% of the world is on facebook. Glocalising and surveillance. Is social media a tool for liberation or repression? – ambivalent- it can go both ways- it is just a tool and not the only tool that mobilises people.
