I came across this photographic essay on the magnum website, having watched 4 or 5 different ones I think this one left the biggest impression on me. First of all I liked the idea behind the essay speaking about the human being, contradictions of life, old traditions and new rituals, pain and pleasure, religious and pagan, life and death, water and earth. Christina Rodero’s pictures are all in black and white which makes them more powerful due to its contrasting colours (it is difficult to decide or explain as to why it is that black and white photography seems so much more appealing and strong- in my opinion at least…)
I liked how it was split into 5 different sets of photography, each representing a different set of images of ritual, tradition, of a different culture and the music that played along with it. The beginning and end had the same music which gave it the clear structure of an essay/ story.
